Nancy K. Ury

I joined the West Point Thoroughbreds team in May 2011 as Vice President of West Coast Operations. My prior work experience in the horse racing industry had been in racing offices around the country, the test barn at Oaklawn Park, the stable office at Hollywood Park and even the Steward’s stand. These positions had me dealing with trainers, jockey agents, racing officials, management, etc. My new venture allows me to work directly with owners for the first time. It’s been an honor to spend time around such an amazing group of people. Whether it’s taking owners to the paddock to the see their horse being saddled for a race or discussing yearlings, horse racing is always a new adventure.

Interesting Facts:
*Played tennis from age 5. Started playing tournaments (singles & doubles) around age 12 and went to college on a tennis scholarship
*Trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
*Freelance handicapper, analyst and reporter for TVG
*My favorite horse racing memory was going to the backside at Oaklawn Park with my grandpa and watch the Clydesdales pull the starting gate
*Proud to be 3rd generation Arkansan
*Favorite West Point horse: Awesome Gem
*Was writer for a Mixed Martial Arts website

Greatest Accomplishment:
I consider my greatest accomplishment being able to work in the family business. The Ury name has been in horse racing for four generations. My great-grandfather kickstarted things in the harness industry. My grandfather and father were both jockeys, owners and trainers in the thoroughbred game. They all had such a respect and passion for the game, and that has been passed on to me.

Best West Point moment:
I scored my first West Point win with Awesome Gem in the Lone Star Park Handicap. My parents drove from Hot Springs, Arkansas to meet me and were able to experience that amazing day. After all his years in the sport, my dad said (through tears of joy) that the Lones Star Park Handicap was his favorite win. It was such an honor to share the winner’s circle with the man I admire the most.

Hobbies & Interests:
Horse racing, reality tv, watching mixed martial arts, art museums, going to the movies, trail riding, taking my dog to the beach.
